What are Sandbox Games?

Sandbox games are video games in which players can decide how to play. Even though there are always some limits, players have access to a vast world. In some games, the player can choose to do specific tasks or quests, but most of the time, they are not required to move forward. The focus is on letting players try things out and look around so they can learn independently. Many sandbox games have open-ended gameplay, which means there is no set endpoint, and the player can play for as long as they want.

Brief History of sandbox games

Sandbox games for PC started as games for kids to play. The idea came from watching kids play with toys like building blocks and sandboxes. These toys let kids use their imaginations to make anything they want. Some of the first sandbox games were made in the 1970s and 1980s. Games like Spacewar!, Rogue, and Sim City are still popular today.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, games like Grand Theft Auto, Rollercoaster Tycoon, and The Sims changed the industry and made it more well-known. Players got used to going at their own pace when they explored and played games.

Today, sandbox games are more popular than ever. They keep allowing players to explore virtual worlds without being limited by goals or objectives, and they add interesting stories as a bonus. A lot of the old game series is still played by a lot of people. Games like Grand Theft Auto have had a lot of follow-ups. Because of new games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Minecraft, the genre has become more varied.

How is the sandbox game played?

Sandbox games are made to be free-form and fun to play over and over again, so everyone plays them differently. A lot of the time, players finish scenarios out of order or do things differently than how the game’s designers planned. The game can be built and changed to reflect the player’s personality and make them feel like they own it. Because of these different parts, each game is played differently and feels like it was made just for each player.

Two kinds of sandbox games are open-world role-playing games (RPGs) and city-building simulators. Even though most games started on personal computers (PCs), many can now be played on consoles and mobile devices.

Here are the Top 5 Sandbox Games For PC In 2023

  1. Minecraft
  2. Grand Theft Auto V
  3. Hitman
  4. Scrap Mechanic
  5. Kerbal Space Program

1. Minecraft

In the video game Minecraft, players use different kinds of blocks to build and destroy things in three-dimensional worlds. Survival and Creative are the two main ways to play. In Survival, players have to find their food and building materials. They can also talk to moving creatures or mobs that look like blocks. In Creative, players get items and don’t have to eat to stay alive. They can also break through any block in an instant. There are versions for the Xbox 360, the Mac, and the PC. There are also versions for Android, the Kindle Fire, the iPhone, and the iPad. It is one of the most popular sandbox games people like to play.

2. Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V is an action-adventure game that came out in 2013. It was made by Rockstar North and sold by Rockstar Games. After Grand Theft Auto IV in 2008, this is the seventh main game in the series and the fifteenth overall. The game’s world can be explored on foot or by car and can be played from a third-person or first-person point of view. The player controls the three main characters during the single-player mode and can switch between their inside and outside missions. Grand Theft Auto V came out in September 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, in November 2014 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, in April 2015 for Windows, and in March 2022 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

3. Hitman

From March to October 2016, the stealth video game Hitman, which IO Interactive made, came out in parts for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is the sixth main entry in the Hitman series. It has six episodes and is the first book in the World of Assassination trilogy. It comes after Hitman: Absolution (2012). In the single-player story, the genetically modified assassin Agent 47 goes on a world tour and solves a series of murders that don’t seem to be related. After finishing this trilogy of stealth sandbox games, players can go back to the Hitman 3 keypad safe codes.

4. Scrap Mechanic

Even though it’s still in Early Access, Scrap Mechanic is already set up to be a big sandbox hit. Like Minecraft, it’s up to your imagination and how you use the essential pieces to make a miniature work of art. Scrap Mechanic is different from other building games because it has moving parts. This gives the game momentum. It makes it different from most other games, primarily about building forts and other things that don’t move. Even a castle that looks like it’s just standing still can come to life in Scrap Mechanic, thanks to its complex unlocking systems. On the other hand, the cars, tanks, and hovercraft really show what they can do.

5. Kerbal Space Program

Kerbal Space Program is the only sandbox on this list where it will help me to know a lot about math and physics. In this ambitious simulator, players must settle on planets, send rockets into space, mine asteroids and play with moon buggies. How the players handle this is primarily up to them. Kerbal Space Program, one of the best free games out there, is getting a follow-up. But it gives you a reason to play the first one before the second one comes out. The first game gives you almost unlimited chances to mess around with high-budget science. Also, it has a complete set of missions and a sandbox mode where you can play however you want.
